ABSTRACT Small objects, particularly coins, are identified as to their size by passing them in a movement path through an area measuring light path consisting of a monolithic photovoltaic cell, such as a solar cell, and a light source on opposite sides of a narrow path. The area of the measuring path occluded by the object shadow as it falls on the photovoltaic cell is measured and compared with a table stored in a controlling microprocessor, the object being accepted if the measured area is within predetermined limits. Preferably an edge portion detector is disposed ahead of the area measuring light path and the area is measured as the edge detector detects the edge, reducing the size of photovoltaic cell that is required. In a battery operated apparatus intended for coin-operated newspaper vending boxes, in order to maximize battery life, the detectors and the microprocessor are quiescent until an object detector, cycled by a clock to reduce its duty cycle, detects an object in the movement path. Upon such detection a maximum reading is taken with the area detector fully illuminated and unoccluded, which is then used to recalculate the acceptance/rejection limits to compensate for changed ambient conditions and component changes. A minimum reading with the path not illuminated may also be taken. A new latch mechanism for a newspaper vending box is also disclosed.
