An apparatus and method for treating an intervertebral disc having an inner nucleus pulpous and an outer annulus fibrous includes a thermal probe defining proximal and distal ends and having a guidable region adjacent the distal end thereof. The guidable region is characterized by having sufficient rigidity to advance within the annulus fibrous of the intervertebral disc in response to an axial force exerted on the proximal end of the thermal probe while having sufficient flexibility to substantially follow and conform to an azimuthal course defined by the natural striata of the annulus fibrous. The thermal probe is adapted for connection to a thermal energy source to provide energy to the annulus fibrous to alleviate pain associated with the intervertebral disc.

L'invention concerne un dispositif et un procédé permettant de traiter un disque invertébral présentant un noyau gélatineux à l'intérieur et un anneau fibreux à l'extérieur. Le dispositif comprend une sonde thermique définissant des extrémités proximale et distale et une zone orientable à proximité de l'extrémité distale. La zone orientable se caractérise en se qu'elle présente une rigidité suffisante pour avancer à l'intérieur de l'anneau fibreux du disque invertébral en réponse à une force axiale exercée sur l'extrémité proximale de la sonde thermique, et une souplesse suffisante pour suivre et s'adapter sensiblement à un parcours azimutal défini par les stries de l'anneau fibreux. La sonde thermique est conçue pour être reliée à une source d'énergie thermique afin de fournir de l'énergie thermique à l'anneau fibreux de manière à soulager la douleur associée au disque invertébré.
