ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Stability of levels in the multilevel transmission of signals on optical fibres is ensured by applying the outputs of increasing numbers of incoherent light sources to a light guide to represent increasing levels, the outputs of the sources thus being summed to produce the various levels. The multilevel sig- nals are generated by using parallel outputs from a shift regis- ter receiving binary data in serial form, the outputs of the register being fed to the light sources through amplifiers sub- jected to automatic gain control by signals derived from the light output of the sources.
