ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE To turn elongate objects 2, particularly steel blooms, which are lying across spaced horizontal supports 1, a carriage 3 runs beneath the level of the supports 1 and carries a stop 23 to engage the object and a raisable turning member 18 to engage the underside of the object and lift it so as to turn it. To enable this apparatus successively to turn a plurality of parallel objects, the stop 23 is movable from a first position below the support level to a second position above the support level and, when in said second position, is depressible. Thereby, the turning member 18 can turn the object over on top of the stop, allowing the carriage to proceed to the next object.
