ABSTRACT "APPARATUS FOR USE IN AN EXCHANGE OF A TELEPHONE SYSTEM" As the result of actuation of a signalling key in a subscriber station (T1 to Tn), an exchange (VSt) is supplied with a signal characteristic which results in the connection to the subscriber station of an auxiliary connection set (5) which contains a speech recognition system (SV). The fact that this connection has taken place is communicated to the requesting subscriber by means of an alert-signal preferably comprising a return speech signal. The subscriber can then speak-in a predetermined word command as a speech signal which is recognised as a function request in the speech recognition system and the appropriate auxiliary function is provided. This transmission of word commands as speech signals facilitates provision of auxiliary Functions overlong- distance networks. Existing and conventional telephone subscriber stations for use with a PBX and having a signalling key can be used. When a speaker-dependent speech recognition system is used, a subscriber can be checked as to his authorisation to a specific auxiliary function.
