A B S T R A C T An apparatus for vibrating a pipe string in a borehole is provided, the apparatus comprising means for generating at a downhole location lingitudinal vibrations in the string in response to flow of fluid through the interior of said string, said means for generating vibrations comprising a hydraulic motor of the moineau type having a stator part and a rotor part, the stator part forming part of the string and the rotor part being coupled to a percussion device which longitudinally moves the rotor part relative to the stator part in an oscillating manner during the course of each rotation of the rotor part relative to the stator part. The percussion device consists of a pair of percussion rings having mating surfaces which have in circumferential direction a rugged profile, one of said rings being connected to said rotor part, the other ring being connected to said stator part.
