21712-208 ABSTRACT An apparatus for winding or unwinding a web of material comprises two stands spaced apart from one another in which horizontal clamping chucks that can be inserted in the ends of a winding tube are respectively mounted so as to rotate. The apparatus has a device for supporting the reel on the underside during winding or unwinding and movable with the reel. In a preferred embodiment the supporting device comprises an endless belt mounted in a height-adjustable frame so as to be free- wheeling. With this device heavy reels can be wound or unwound without crepe folds or tears occurring.
