This apparatus (10) includes a mechanism (46) which grasps a film (112) by its edges and moves said film (112) through a drying zone, with said mechanism (46) holding said film taut without substantial stretching of said film in the drying zone, and a means (104) to remove the evaporated solvent from said apparatus (10). The apparatus (10) is particularly useful for drying film of polybenzoxazole, polybenzothiazole and copolymers thereof, as well as molecular composite films. A method of drying/heat treating film is also disclosed.
