The invention relates to an application device (10) for applying individual flat material segments (26), especially labels, to be separated from a flat material web (20), to products (P) that continuously move past the application device (10). The application device comprises a separation unit (50) for separating a flat material segment (22) from the flat material web (20) and an application unit (60) for applying the flat material segment (26) to the product (P). Between the separation unit (50) and the application unit (60) a buffer unit (70) is provided that decouples the separation process performed by the separation unit (50) from the application process performed by the application unit (60).
