AUTO-BIAS DEVELOPING PROCESS IN ELECTROPHOTOGRAPHIC COPYING MACHINES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An auto-bias developing process in an electrophotographic copying machine which prevents the occurrence of a background smearing. A surface potential of a photosensitive member is detected by a detecting electrode which operates through a developing solution. The detected potential is subjected to a low impedance conversion, after which it is applied to guard electrode which surround the detecting electrode with an insulator interposed therebetween. The detected potential is also fed to an operational amplifier to produce a potential of a magnitude which does not cause a smearing, which poten- tial is applied to a developing electrode. Any leakage current from the developing electrode is diverted to the guard electrode, whereby the detecting electrode is enabled to provide a faithful detection of the surface potential of the photosensitive member. - 1 -
