The invention com- prises a dispensing device for applying a uniform band of li- quid material along selected surface portions of the peri- pheral margins of sheet mate- rial (19). A family of inter- changeable applicator tips (18) having different configu- rations is provided for use with the dispensing device. Each tip (18) is of a composite construction including a rela- tively rigid base member (66) covered by a soft absorbent body (67) for contacting and transferring to the sheet sur- face the layer of liquid materi- al. The dispensing device also comprises one or more appli- cator guns (17) and a liquid material supply system (93) including an enclosed recepta- cle (94) for a liquid material supply (95) and an enclosed receptacle (96) for a solvent supply (97) for selectively flushing the liquid material from the applica- tor guns and tips. The applicator guns (17) may be mounted upon a carriage (16) oscillating between an applying position and a position where spent applicator tips are removed and replaced by new tips by a suitably programmed robot (21).
