ABSTRACT An applicator tool is provided for use in applying flexible coverings, such as vinyl wall coverings, onto a support surface and for smoothing out wrinkles during application. The tool includes an elongated handle portion from which a flat blade portion laterally extends. The blade is formed of a stiff, yet resilient plastic, preferably an ultra-high molecular weight polymer, that is self lubricating and has a low co- efficient of friction. The blade terminates in a longitudinally extending primary working edge that is relatively blunt. Secondary edges extend between the handle portion and each end of the primary working edge. Each secondary edge and the primary working edge forms a rounded corner with the corners formed at different radii of curvature. It is preferred that one secondary edge is at a right angle while the other secondary edge is at an acute angle with respect to the primary working edge. Margins adjacent each edge are tapered by providing one or more faces that are oblique to the blade surfaces. Preferably the tool is of integral one- piece molded construction having pairs of ribs that project oppositely one another to form the handle. Tear-drop shaped flat end panels are oriented perpendicularly to the blade portion to form the tool ends, and elongated opening helps form the handle. Notch and port openings facilitate hanging the tool from a belt clip.
