A B S T R A C T An animal ear tag applicator comprising a spear adapted to carry the anchor portion of an ear tag, operable by a lever or squeeze action handle in conjunction with an apertured base so that the spear carries the anchor portion of the tag through the ear of the animal and through the aperture in the base. The spear is arranged to be able to pivot once the tag has been inserted to assist in withdrawing the spear from the ear, and the base is provided with buffers arranged to remove the tag from the spear before the spear is withdrawn from the ear.
