Water-based cleaning compositions for removing a variety of stains or deposits from a variety of substrates, the compositions consisting essentially of tri-sodium phosphate: ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) and/or phytic acid or a mixture of them; ethylene n-butyl ether and/or butyl salicylate or a mixture of them; and acetone and/or a member of the group consisting of dimethyl adipate, dimethyl glutarate, dimethyl succinate ar a mixture of them in water. Such compositions may further captain acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide or both.
