ABSTRACT An aqueous coating agent for anodic electric immersion lacquering comprises a water-soluble or - dispersible addition compound at least partly neutralized with a basic compound and esterified. The addition compound com- prises from 10 to 35% by weight of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and from 65 to 90% by weight of a butadiene polymer which is fluid at 20°C, contains at least 50 mole percent of butadiene units and has a molar weight of from 400 to 6000. The addition compound is esterified to 20 to 70 equivalent percent, based on the acid number, with an alcohol of the formula: Image wherein R1, R2 and R3 each represents hydrogen or methyl, R4 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl and n is zero or one.
