An aqueous disinfectant formulation comprising at least one phenolic compound of natural origin having antimicrobial activity is disclosed herein. The phenolic compounds are essential oil components and are not easily dispersed in water due to their hydrophobic nature. The addition of a surfactant and a solvent allow for the formation of a solution or dispersion of the phenolic compounds in water.
