ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Aqueous disperse compositions capable of irreversibly forming films, comprising an internal phase of at least one film-forming, non asphaltic, oleaginous material and an external phase comprising a clay-thickened water slurry, containing, in addition to clay, a flocculating agent are disclosed. Typical film-forming materials are made by reacting a carboxylic acid with an overbased salt of an organic acid, particularly those that have been converted into non-Newtonian colloidal disperse systems such as an alkaline earth metal sulfonate gel. Typical clays are montmorillonite-type clays and usually the composition as a whole is thixotropic. These compositions are useful, for example, as coatings for preventing corrosion of metallic surfaces.
