The invention relates to aqueous dispersions of water-soluble polymers of N- vinylcarboxamides which are substantially salt-free and contain anionic polymeric stabilizers having a comblike molecular structure, to processes for preparing the dispersions in the presence of anionic polymeric stabilizers having a comblike molecular structure, and to the use of the dispersions as retention aids or fixing aids in papermaking.
