ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride by dis- continuous polymerisation in aqueous suspension in the presence of a monomer- soluble catalyst and a suspension stabiliser carried out in a polymerisation kettle of at least 40 m3 capacity, wherein the catalyst is fed in via a transfer lock within the vinyl chloride feed line to the polymerisation kettle, the space between the transfer lock and a shut-off device provided for isolating the transfer lock from the parts of the system containing vinyl chloride is filled with liquid before introducing the catalyst into the transfer lock and the polymerisation kettle is left unopened between poly- merisation cycles and, if necessary, is automatically cleaned hydrodynamically between polymerisation cycles, whereby emission of vinyl chloride is controlled.
