Aqueous polymer emulsions are obtainable by polymerizing a mixture which contains no surfactant monomers and comprises hydrophobic and hydrophilic ethylenically unsaturated monomers by the free radical aqueous emulsion polymerization method and using, as the dispersing medium, a mixture of water and an organic solvent which is not completely soluble in water.
