AQUEOUS PROTECTIVE COATING COMPOSITION COMPRISING 3-ALKOXY-2-HYDROXYPROPYLHYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE AND FILM FORMING LATEX Abstract of the Disclosure An aqueous protective coating composition comprising (a) a nonionic, water-soluble 3-alkoxy-2-hydroxypropylhydroxy- ethylcellulose wherein the alkyl moiety is a straight or branched chain alkyl group having 6 to 24 carbon atoms and (b) a film forming latex, is disclosed. The 3-alkoxy-2- hydroxypropylhydroxyethylcellulose used in preparing the aqueous protective coating compositions of this invention is substantially completely soluble in water at room temperature. It can be prepared from hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC), or can be prepared directly from cellulose.
