ABSTRACT An aminophenolic compound can be synthesized by contacting a halo-nitro-phenolic compound, such as 2-chloro-4,6-dinitroresorcinol, with a hydrogenating agent, such as hydrogen, and a catalyst, such as palla- dium-on-carbon, in an aqueous solution in the presence of an acid such as phosphoric acid. Reduction in an aqueous medium is safer and more cost-effective than reduction in an organic medium. The acid prevents oxidation of the monomer by oxygen dissolved in the aqueous medium. The process may be used to synthesize aminophenols as 4,6-diaminoresorcinol. 37,361-F
