A process is disclosed for treating aqueous streams containing organics and/or phosphorus, which acts to sig- nificantly reduce the phosphorus content of the stream and/or remove biologically assimilatable organic material therefrom. The process selects assimilating microorganisms by establishing conditions in differential environments which enhance the assimilating functionality of the micro- organisms and recycles the enhanced microorganisms to maxi- mize their effect in reducing or removing organics from the process stream.
