22124-1689 AQUEOUS SUSPENSION OF DELAMINATED VERMICULITE Abstract of Disclosure Compositions comprising chemically delaminated vermiculite platelets ioniclly bonded to organo-substituted onium ions that can be polymerized by radical or ionic polymerization. The platelets are prepared by swelling with water a vermiculite ore intercalated with sodium, lithium or onium cations, delaminating the ore by subjecting it to a shearing step and contacting the platelets so produced in aqueous suspension with organo-substituted onium ions. The compositions can be shaped and cured into various water stable articles, such as films and sheets, without any post-treatment or incorporation of large quantities of organic materials that degrade the high-temperature properties of the articles.
