Abstract of the Disclosure: Aqueous synthetic resin emulsions are obtainable by emulsion polymerization of a) from 35 to 90% by weight of an ester of an .alpha.,.beta.- ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid of not more than 5 carbon atoms and a C1-C12-alkanol or a mixture of such esters (monomer I), b) from 5 to 60% by weight of styrene and/or vinyl- toluenes (monomer II), c) from 1 to 5% by weight of one or more olefinically unsaturated sulfonic acids of the general formula III (monomer III) Image (III) where n is from 0 to 10, R1 to R3 are each hydrogen or methyl and X is oxygen or imino, and d) from 0 to 5% by weight of other copolymerizable monomers (monomer IV), the amounts by weight of the monomers I, II and IV being chosen within the stated limits to that a polymer con- sisting only of these monomers would have a glass transi- tion temperature of from -50 to +20°C.
