The present invention is directed to a particular arabinoxylan ("AX") preparation and the finding that this preparation has a beneficial effect on the organization of the intestinal microbial community in the lumen and in particular at the site of the gut mucosa, where it modulates the barrier function of the intestinal surface, primarily by modulating the mucosa-associated microbial community towards a relative increase of health beneficial bacteria, such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. It is accordingly a first aspect of the present invention to provide said arabinoxylan preparation characterized in comprising isolated water-soluble arabinoxylans and the use thereof to improve functioning (e.g. barrier function) of the intestinal epithelium. Thus, in a further aspect the present invention provides compositions, both pharmaceutical and nutritional compositions, comprising said arabinoxylan preparations; in particular pharmaceuticals, medical foods, food supplements or food compositions, such as infant formula products, dairy products, bakery products or pastry products. The compositions optionally comprise probiotics such as Bifidobacterium or Lactobacillus.
L'invention concerne une préparation d'arabinoxylanes ("AX") particulière qui a un effet bénéfique sur l'organisation de la communauté microbienne intestinale dans la lumière et en particulier au niveau de la muqueuse intestinale où elle module la fonction barrière de la surface intestinale, principalement en modulant la communauté microbienne associée à la muqueuse pour obtenir une augmentation relative des bactéries ayant un effet bénéfique sur la santé, telles que bactéries bifidus et lactobacilles. Ainsi, selon un premier aspect, l'invention concerne une préparation d'arabinoxylanes caractérisée en ce qu'elle comprend des arabinoxylanes isolés hydrosolubles, ainsi que son utilisation pour améliorer le fonctionnement (par exemple, la fonction barrière) de l'épithélium intestinal. Selon un autre aspect, l'invention concerne des compositions pharmaceutiques et nutritionnelles comprenant ces préparations d'arabinoxylanes, en particulier des produits pharmaceutiques, des alicaments, des compléments alimentaires ou des compositions alimentaires, tels que produits destinés aux nourrissons, produits laitiers, produits de boulangerie ou produits de pâtisserie. Les compositions comprennent optionnellement des probiotiques tels que Bifidobacterium ou Lactobacillus.
