ARC DISCHARGE LAMPS HAVING AN ARC TUBE AND SURROUNDING CHAMBER CONTAINING A METAL HALIDE VAPOR ABSTRACT An arc discharge device comprises a source of continuous short ultraviolet emission and a chamber separate from the source. The camber contains molecules of metal halide vapor which absorb the ultraviolet emission from the source, photo-dissociate and, as a result thereof, emit radiation. The emitted radiation depends upon the metal halide vapor which can be, e.g., HgBr (bluish-green); HgI2 (360 to 452 nm); SnCl2 (488 to 698nm); CH3HgBr (bluish-green), NH3 (500nm); or CF3I (infra-red at about 1315nm).
