ABSTRACT An arc furnace installation wherein the arc furnace is air- tightly enclosed with a shroud and a scrap preheating chamber moves into or out of the shroud in such a way that the preheating chamber may be selectively brought to a position immediately above the arc furnace. A scrap preheating position is spaced apart from the arc furnace by a predetermined distance and a scrap charging position is located outside of the shroud. The number of openings of the shroud may be reduced to a minimum and consequently the total area of the openings may be minimized.
