A circuit for providing D.C. current from a power source having a current regulating input to a plasma system including an electrode and a nozzle with a plasma arc opening exposing the electrode to a juxtapositioned workpiece, which circuit has a first circuit branch for creating a pilot arc across the electrode and nozzle, a second circuit branch for creating an operative plasma arc across the electrode and the workpiece, a current sensor means in the second circuit branch for sensing the workpiece current in the second circuit branch, switch means for opening the first circuit branch when the sensed workpiece current exceeds a preselected current to transfer the pilot arc to the operative plasma arc, means for regulating the current in the first circuit branch until the arc transfer and means for increasing the pilot current supplied from said power source to first circuit branch when sensed workpiece current exceeds a low threshold value.

Circuit fournissant à un système à plasma un courant c.c. provenant d'une source d'alimentation dotée d'une entrée de régulation de courant. Le système à plasma comprend une électrode et une buse ayant un orifice d'éjection de plasma, l'électrode étant exposée à une pièce à ouvrer juxtaposée. Le circuit a un premier embranchement pour produire un arc pilote entre l'électrode et la buse, un deuxième embranchement pour créer un arc de plasma actif entre l'électrode et la pièce à ouvrer, un capteur de courant dans le deuxième embranchement du circuit, pour capter dans le deuxième embranchement du circuit le courant traversant la pièce à ouvrer, un moyen de commutation pour ouvrir le premier embranchement du circuit lorsque la valeur captée du courant dans la pièce à ouvrer dépasse un seuil présélectionné afin de transférer l'arc pilote à l'arc de plasma actif, un moyen d'assurer la régulation du courant du premier embranchement du circuit jusqu'au transfert de l'arc et un moyen d'accroître le courant pilote transmis de ladite source d'alimentation au premier embranchement du circuit lorsque la valeur captée du courant traversant la pièce à ouvrer dépasse un seuil inférieur déterminé.
