A communication network which connects two data devices, such as routers, ATM switches, servers, over an agile transport network is described. The agile transport network has a plurality of agile nodes which reconfigure the bandwidth of the nodes in response to an external stimulus. The external stimulus can be a request for additional bandwidth from one of the data devices, or can be traffic information, which is interpreted by the nodes of the transport network. Each node has a contract manager which negotiates with contract managers at other nodes new paths for the additional bandwidth, and accordingly alters the connectivity map of a local agile switch.
