ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is disclosed a mixture of polycyclic aromatic polycarboxylic anhydries carrying nuclear nitro groups that is substantially soluble in acetone but substantially insoluble in water and a process for preparing the mixture. The mixture so formed is useful as a curing agent, for example, in combination with epoxy resins. The preferred process involves reacting a carbonaceous slurry with nitric acid.
