ABSTRACT A process for the bromination of polystyrenic homo- and co-polymers using bromine as the reaction medium, bromine chloride as the bromination reagent and a Lewis acid catalyst. The brominated styrenic polymer is recovered from the reaction mixture and has improved product quality. The degree of bromination of the styrenic polymers is controlled by adjusting the molar ratio of the bromination reagent to polystyrene, and can yield an average of from about 1 to about 5 bromine atoms per aromatic unit.
