TITLE Aromatic Compound-Oxidizing Enzyme System INVENTORS Abdul Waheed Khan Ralph P. Overend ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An oxygenase enzyme system was isolated from Trametes versicolor fungus, that is capable of attack- ing multiple-substituted benzene rings containing at least one hydroxy group or primary amine group, as well as modifying lignin surfaces. This enzyme system is produced late in the growth cycle without the requirement of any inducer. This enzyme system is thermophilic and operates at pH about 3-5 in the presence of air or oxygen. For example, the action of this enzyme system caused the loss of UV absorption in ferulic acid, the formation of hydroxy muconic semi- aldehyde from catechol, and oxidation with the produc- tion of CO2 of a number of other hydroxy aromatic com- pounds as well as lignin surfaces.
