Described in this invention is an aromatic polyamide of structural formula (I) for preparing an optical anisotropic dope under the conditions of less activity than sulfuric acid, less environmental contamination and easiness in process control, wherein R represents an aromatic group such as (a), (b) or (c) having a nitrile group substituted on the aromatic nucleus of which amount is 25 to 100 mol% of the total aromatic group; where X represents H, Cl, Br, I, NO2, or an alkoxy group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, n represents an integer between 10 and 100,000, y represents (d) or (e), and R' represents (f), (g) or (h).

L'invention porte sur des polyamides aromatiques de formule (I) servant à préparer des dopants optiques anisotropiques présentant une activité et une pollution moindre que l'acide sulfurique, et une plus grande facilité de contrôle des processus. Dans la formule (I): R représente un groupe aromatique tel que (a), (b) ou (c) comportant un groupe nitrile substitué sur le noyau aromatique et atteignant entre 25 et 100 mole % du total du groupe aromatique; X représente H, Cl, Br, I, NO¿2?, ou un alkoxy C¿1?-C¿4?; n représente un entier compris entre 10 et 100 000; y représente (d) ou (e), et R' représente (f), (g) ou (h).
