A simplified, readily controllable process is provided for the production of high molecular weight aromatic sulfide/sulfone polymers which comprises contacting under suitable polymerization reaction conditions of time, temperature, and pressure: (1) at least one dihaloaromatic sulfone, (2) water, and (3) a preformed complex comprising at least one alkali metal hydrosulfide and at least one alkali metal aminoalkanoate.
