2063585 9100784 PCTABS00003 An apparatus in a press line includes presses (1, 2) along a material flow direction for stepwise processing of a workpiece. A transfer device (13) moves each workpiece from one press (1, 2) to the next in the press line. The transfer devices (13) are displaceable transversely of the press line. Further, a carriage (8) is included for each press (1, 2) for transport of tools (10, 11), the carriage being drivable along tracks (7). To permit rapid tool change and maximum utilisation of the space surrounding the press line, the carriage (8) is provided with a first end portion fitted with equipment (9) for transport of a tool (10, 11) to or from a press (1, 2), and with a second end portion which carries the transfer device (13) so that this projects cantilevered out from the carriage (8). The carriage is drivable along the tracks (7) partly to an operative position with the transfer device (13) in between adjacent presses (1, 2), partly to a tool change position with the first end portion in between adjacent presses (1, 2), and partly to a position at a tool store disposed along the press line and in spaced-apart relationship therewith, for depositing or collecting a tool.
