A cryosurgical catheter probe and method of operation are described. The probe comprises a Joule Thompson probe tip (20) joined to a catheter (10) which includes an inner supply conduit (12) and an outer exhaust conduit (14). A pump (26) is coupled to the downstream end of the exhaust conduit (14) to draw exhaust cryogen through the exhaust conduit. The pump (26) produces a negative pressure at the pump sufficiently great to produce a negative pressure in the exhaust path adjacent to the tip (20). The negative pressure reduces the chances of a leak, and also reduces the chances of cryogen escaping from the catheter into the patient's blood vessel if a leak does occur.

L'invention concerne une cyrosonde de cathéter ainsi qu'un procédé de fonctionnement associé. Cette sonde présente un embout (20) de Joule Thompson, assemblé à un cathéter (10), lequel comporte un conduit d'alimentation intérieur (12) ainsi qu'un conduit de sortie extérieur (14). On a couplé une pompe (26) à l'extrémité aval du conduit de sortie (14), afin d'aspirer le fluide cryogène sortant, à travers ledit conduit. Cette pompe (26) produit à son niveau une pression négative qui est suffisamment élevée pour produire une pression négative dans le trajet de sortie adjacent à l'embout (20). La pression négative diminue les possibilités de fuite, ainsi que l'éventualité pour le fluide cryogène de sortir du cathéter et de s'introduire dans le vaisseau sanguin du patient, en cas de fuite.
