This invention is a device to reduce the generation of extraneous noise in a microphone, such as the mouthpiece of a telephone handset, due to airflow at the entrance to the microphone. The problem of airflow is particularly acute for the plosive sounds such as "p" and "t" for which the velocity of air flow is high. The invention provides the mouthpiece with an array of small holes, a backing chamber, and a sound tube leading to the microphone transducer which is offset from all the holes. The holes are preferably circular and have a maximum diameter of 1 mm. Significant reductions in broadband airflow noise are achieved.
