Abstract An arrangement for measuring the position of a part in a machine which is linearly traversible in relation to a fixed part of the machine, such as the position of slides or spindle heads in machine tools, comprising a scale provided on one of the two relatively movable machine parts and reading equipment on the other machine part, characterised in that the reading equipment consists of a plurality of reading devices associated with a scale and spaced at intervals equal to the utilisable length of the scale. Known arrangement require the length of the scale to be equal to the distance over which the movable part of the machine can be traversed, so that the reading equipment travels along the entire graduated length of the scale. The diffi- culties of machining the surface of the components of such known machines bearing the graduations of the scale so that they possess the desired parallelism and flatness, and providing sufficient space to accommodate the scales where long scales are required are avoided by the present invention.
