The invention relates to an arrangement of anode for utilisation in an electrolysis cell for production of aluminium metal from an aluminium containing component in a molten salt electrolyte, in which the aluminium containing component mainly is alumina and the molten salt electrolyte is based on mixtures of NaF and AIF3 and CaF2, and possibly alkaline and alkaline earth halides. More specific it relates to improvements of anodes useful for retrofit of existing electrolysis cells, in which the anodes remains inert during operation. The anode is characterised by being shaped in a manner to increase the area of the electroactive surface. Several examples of such designs are shown. The anode is useful for utilisation in retrofit of existing electrolysis cells of Hall-Hèroult design for aluminium production.

Cette invention concerne un dispositif d'anode pour utilisation dans une cellule électrolytique servant à produire du métal aluminium à partir d'un composant renfermant de l'aluminium dans un électrolyte de sel fondu, dans lequel le composant renfermant de l'aluminium est essentiellement de l'alumine et l'électrolyte de sel fondu est à base de mélanges de NaF, de AIF¿3? Et de CaF¿2?, et éventuellement d'halogénures alcalins et alcalino-terreux. Plus précisément, cette invention porte sur des améliorations d'anode qui peuvent être apportées à posteriori sur des cellules électrolytiques existantes dans lesquelles les anodes restent inertes pendant la marche. L'anode se caractérise par une forme qui augmente l'importance de la surface électro-active. Sont illustrés plusieurs exemples de telles anodes. Cette anode peut être utilement montée après coup dans des cellules électrolytiques existantes de type Hall-Hèroult utilisées pour la production d'aluminium.
