ABSTRACT A telephone switching system in which a call proces- sor and port event processor interact to control call progres- sion and switching. The port event processor operates on a real time basis to control and sense events as represented by supervisory signals at the ports. The port event processor generates status information in response to sensed port events that are stored in a common store. A call processor on an as- needed, non-real time basis, responds to the stored status information and generates command signals that are returned to the storage means. The port event processor can retrieve the command signals to control events at the ports. The port event processor senses events at the ports as represented by signals having a minimum and maximum duration, and the call processor can, by proper command signals, vary the minimum and maximum duration.
