In the past, parabolic offset reflector antennas were fed a signal through a corrugated horn in order to optimise field distribution and polarisation at the reflector. It has been found that cost savings and other advantages are realised by using an array of radiating patches. The geometrical placement of the radiating patches and the power distribution to each patch is arranged such that radiated energy from the patches sums at the reflector surface to produce the predetermined field distribution and polarisation.

Antérieurement, les réflecteurs excentrés des antennes paraboliques étaient alimentés par un signal passant par un cornet ondulé de manière à optimiser la distribution du champ et la polarisation au niveau du réflecteur. Or, il a été découvert que d'importantes économies et autres avantages provenaient de l'utilisation d'un réseau de surfaces radiantes séparées. La positionnement géométrique desdites surfaces et la répartition de la puissance entre les différentes surfaces sont organisés de manière à ce que l'énergie rayonnée par lesdites surfaces séparées s'additionne à la surface du réflecteur pour produire la distribution de champ et la polarisation prédéterminées.
