ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a new process for the preparation of arteries for use in heterologous transplants which reduces immunological drawbacks and decreases the risk of contamination and/or infection. The process comprises obtaining a length of animal artery free from surrounding tissue, any collateral vessels being sealed off, removing muscle tissue and elastic fibres from the wall of the artery by proteolytic splitting whereby a solution containing a proteolytic enzyme at an appropriate pH is passed continuously through the artery and subjecting the collagen tube thereby produced to tanning by passing continuously therethrough a buffered cross- linking solution whereby the density and stability of the tube is increased.
