An arthroscopic surgical instrument includes a hollow tube with an actuator coupled to its proximal end and an end effector coupled to its distal end. The actuator and the end effector are coupled by a cylindrical push rod which passes through the hollow tube. The push rod includes a frangible link in the form of a flattened portion with strength reducing semicircular side cuts which breaks when a predetermined force is applied to the end effector by the actuator. The end effector includes a stationary jaw and a movable jaw. The stationary jaw is coupled to the distal end of the tube and receives the push rod. The movable jaw is coupled to the push rod and is pivotally coupled to the stationary jaw by arcuate engaging surfaces on both jaws. The movable jaw is also provided with a pair of serrated knife-like edges with an inner concave surface between them and the stationary jaw is provided with a receiving opening into which the movable jaw fits when the jaws are in a closed position. The receiving opening is defined by a pair of side walls having an upper taper which terminates in a sharp edge and a distal end wall having a concave inner surface. The concavity of the inner surface of the end wall is defined by a radius from the axis of rotation of the movable jaw. An electrical connection to the hollow tube is provided for supplying the jaws with a cautery current.
Un instrument chirurgical arthroscopique comprend un tube creux présentant un actuateur couplé à son extrémité proximale ainsi qu'un effecteur terminal couplé à son extrémité distale. L'actuateur et l'effecteur terminal sont couplés par une tige pousseuse cyclindrique passant à travers le tube creux. La tige pousseuse comprend une liaison fragile se présentant sous la forme d'une partie aplanie présentant des entailles latérales semicirculaires réduisant la résistance, laquelle rompt lorsqu'une force prédéterminée est appliquée à l'effecteur terminal par l'actuateur. L'effecteur terminal comprend une mâchoire fixe et une mâchoire mobile. La mâchoire fixe est couplée à l'extrémité distale du tube et reçoit la tige pousseuse. La mâchoire mobile est couplée à la tige pousseuse, et est couplée pivotante à la mâchoire fixe par des surfaces de contact arquées situées sur les deux mâchoires. Ladite mâchoire mobile est également dotée d'une paire de fils de type couteau dentelé entre lesquelles se trouve une surface concave interne, et la mâchoire fixe est dotée d'une ouverture réceptrice dans laquelle s'adapte la mâchoire mobile lorsque les mâchoires sont en position fermée. L'ouverture réceptrice est définie par une paire de parois latérales présentant une conicité supérieure aboutissant en un fil tranchant, ainsi qu'une paroi terminale distale présentant une surface interne concave. La concavité de la surface interne de la paroi terminale est définie par un rayon à partir de l'axe de rotation de la mâchoire mobile. La connexion électrique au tube creux est assurée pour l'alimentation desdites mâchoires en courant de cautérisation.
