Permanent indicia can be applied to a surface con- sisting of a polymeric composition having a specific gravity less than about 1.35, and having a roughness average of at least about 2 µm and an average peak width of less than about 200 µm. The indicia are resistant to organic solvents, smearing and abrasion without a permatizing step. The surface can be, for example, the polymeric surface of a marker sleeve, preferably a heat-recoverable marker sleeve.
