A lightweight, flexible articulated wire throat protector is provided for sports players, using Kevlar or plastic helmets, particularly hockey goalie helmets. It is fastened to the helmet with a rod end spherical misalignment-bearing aperture. The throat protector according to the invention is highly efficient in protecting the vital throat areas against an impact of high velocity sports projectiles, i.e., (hockey puck, baseball etc.), lacerations caused by sharp edged objects, i.e., (hockey stick and skate blades etc.), entering through the frontal radius of the horizontal and vertical curvatures, while being sufficiently flexible vertically, to permit free unrestricted movement of the head.
