This invention is an artificial airway device used to facilitate lung ventilation in an unconscious patient; and methods for using and inserting an artificial airway device. The device includes a curved but flexible airway tube, and mask portion. A mask opening portion is shaped so as to fit closely over the laryngeal openin. A seating tip includes a series of thin, flexible fins which project from a finger portion extending from the mask opening portion. The fins seat against the pharyngeal side of the cricoid, just above the esophagus. The mask portion can be anchored against a relatively hard surface without causing damage to delicate tissue in the esophagus. The tip provides a reference during insertion which ensures that the mask portion is properly in place, and adequately anchored. The airway also includes an inflatable cuff used to anchor the artificial airway in place. During insertion, the seating tip is fed into the pharynx adjacent the cricoid. When resistance is felt due to interaction between the tip and the cricoid, insertion is halted. The artificial airway is then pulled back slightly to lift the epiglottis away from the mask opening and so that the cuff is just behind the uvula. The cuff is then inflated. The patient may then be ventilated.

Cette invention concerne à un dispositif de respiration artificielle servant à faciliter la ventilation pulmonaire chez un patient inconscient, et des procédés d'utilisation et d'introduction dudit dispositif de respiration artificielle. Ce dispositif comprend un tube respiratoire incurvé mais souple et une partie masque. Une partie ouverture du masque est conçue selon une forme lui permettant de s'adapter étroitement sur l'ouverture du larynx du patient. Une extrémité d'appui comporte une série d'ailettes minces et souples qui font saillie depuis une partie languette s'étendant à partir de la partie ouverture du masque. Ces ailettes viennent en appui contre le côté pharynx du cartilage cricoïde, juste au-dessus de l'oesophage. La partie masque peut être ancrée contre une surface relativement dure sans endommager le tissu délicat de l'oesophage. L'appui sert de repère pendant l'introduction du dispositif de respiration artificielle afin que l'on puisse s'assurer que la partie masque se trouve dans une position correcte et soit fixée de façon adéquate. Un manchon gonflable sert à maintenir ce dispositif respiratoire en position fixe. Pendant l'introduction du dispositif de respiration artificielle, l'extrémité d'appui avance dans le larynx adjacent au cartilage cricoïde. Lorsqu'on sent une résistance provenant de l'interaction entre l'extrémité d'appui et le cartilage cricoïde, on arrête l'introduction. On tire légèrement le dispositif respiratoire en arrière pour écarter l'épiglotte de l'ouverture du masque, de sorte que le manchon gonflable se trouve juste derrière la luette. Le manchon est ensuite gonflé, et le patient peut être ventilé.
