A device which serves as an artificial pancreas comprises a hollow fiber (12) having an inner diame- ter of about 5 mm which is surrounded by islets of Langerhans (14) enclosed in a housing (42). The islets (14) are suspended in a semi-solid matrix which en- sures desired distribution of the cells about the hol- low fiber (12). The hollow fiber (12) and suspended islets (14) are enclosed in a housing (20, 22) which further aids the desired distribution of islets (14) about the hollow fiber (12). The hollow fiber (12) has a porosity which selectively allows passage of sub- stances having a molecular weight of less than about 100,000 Daltons. The semi-solid matrix in which the islets (14) are embedded and suspended is formed of an appropriate supporting material such as alginate or agar.
