ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Artificial red cells comprising microdroplets of aqueous, stroma-free hemoglobin solution encapsulated in membranes of polymerized hemoglobin permeable to oxygen and impermeable to hemoglobin formed by a process compris- ing forming microdroplets of hemoglobin solution in a con- tinuous oil phase to form an emulsion of hemoglobin in oil and suspending globules of the so-formed emulsion in an aqueous suspending phase which contains a hemoglobin cross- linking agent which is at least bifunctional.
