The invention is in a composition which is useful to dampen noise and vibrations which in composition can be applied to and adhered to a substrate. The composition comprises an emulsion or dispersion of asphalt in water and fillers. Preferably the fillers are alkaline earth metal or alkaline metal carbonates, or sulfates. In another embodiment, the invention is a process for applying a damping composition to a substrate which comprises contacting a composition of an emulsion of asphalt in water and a filler with a substrate. Preferably the asphalt emulsion on the surface of the substrate is exposed to a source of heat so as to dry the composition on the substrate. In a preferred embodiment the substrate is a surface in an automobile such as the floor- board, trunk well, wheel well, rocker panel or underbody.
L'invention concerne une composition utile pour amortir des bruits et des vibrations et qu'on peut appliquer à un substrat afin qu'elle adhère à ce substrat. Cette composition comprend une émulsion ou une dispersion d'asphalte dans de l'eau et des charges. Ces charges consistent, de préférence, en un métal terreux alcalin ou en des carbonates de métaux alcalins ou en des sulfates. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, l'invention concerne un procédé d'application d'une composition d'amortissement à un substrat, ce qui consiste à mettre en contact avec le substrat une composition comprenant une émulsion d'asphalte dans de l'eau et une charge. On expose, de préférence, cette émulsion d'asphalte sur la surface du substrat à une source de chaleur, de manière à sécher ladite composition. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, le substrat consiste en une surface d'automobile, telle que le plancher, le coffre à bagages, le passage de roue, le bas de caisse ou le soubassement.
